A partir desta edição, a revista Continente entra em uma nova fase. Num processo dinâmico e de múltiplos diálogos. No impresso e digital. No conteúdo e na forma.

O projeto gráfico assinado pelo designer e ilustrador Christiano Mascaro espelha com precisão a nova aposta editorial. De lógica plástica e fluida. Os eixos temáticos existem, mas não são escravos das convencionais seções e colunas e outros tipos de recortes. A orientação da leitura é dada pelo desenho, o percurso visual, em que a imagem também pode ser lida como um texto. De menos a mais, num creciendo, como na dinâmica musical, mas aplicada à espacial: num jogo de imagens e textos.

O fio condutor desta nova Continente pretende-se que esteja na excelência gráfica, e em sutis reinvenções e reiterações, a cada novo número. Busca-se o deleite visual, privilegiando o desígnio do design. O prazer do texto encontra o seu par no da imagem. Assim, a leitura pode ser uma experiência mais divertida. Esta é a marca da revista, e está visível – ou subentendida – na marca, logo, a cada novo número, com pequenas variações. Estas representam a síntese da plasticidade e reforçam uma convicção: não render-se às fórmulas prontas, sobretudo as estanques.

A quebra das convenções não fica limitada à estrutura e organização da edição impressa. Está pensada para um ambiente multiplataforma, propondo um outro “alfabeto” em que, se a cultura tem um diálogo no conteúdo, também o exercita no continente. Neste número inaugural da nova fase, a revista celebra Pernambuco. Suas grandezas, riquezas, belezas: naturais e culturais. As coisas únicas ou, no mínimo, singulares.

Para gostos tão diferentes quanto são as pessoas e as culturas esta é uma revista em que a diversidade dá o tom. Do porto de Suape à Ilha de Fernando de Noronha. Do Vale do Catimbau a Katmandu. Do Museu do Cangaço em Serra Talhada aos cangaceiros mitificados em séries e novelas e desmistificados em livros. De um lugar do sabor em Brasília Teimosa (Recife) ao do trabalho no Ceará.

A Continente que, nas suas origens, teve um subproduto de sucesso na Documento, incorpora-o agora às páginas da revista principal. Mantém e aprofunda a ideia, com reportagens e pesquisas que podem servir como fonte segura de conhecimento. Se aí a palavra-chave é fonte, esta foi também a escolhida para sintetizar o tema de estreia: um longo e minucioso panorama sobre a música pernambucana. No calor do verão – a primeira estação da nova Continente – os ritmos quentes de compositores/as e cantores/as pernambucanas/os: populares, de massa, eruditos, de vanguarda.

Por fim, duas curiosidades: a palavra Pernambuco tem, para alguns estrangeiros, dois sentidos desconhecidos da maioria dos brasileiros. Na Espanha está na expressão “aquí y en Pernambuco”, significando este o lugar mais distante e exótico possível. Na França e em outros países é o sinônimo da madeira com que se fabricam os melhores violinos. A Caesalpinia echinata, isto é, o nosso pau-brasil. Para muitos pernambucanos, Pernambuco é apenas um continente, ou, ao menos, como na gravura de Johan Blaeu (1643), “o país de Pernambuco”. Sonhado pelos heróis e mártires de 1824 (cujo bicentenário transcorre neste ano de 2024). Um estado de grandeza cultural e natural que cresce e se multiplica nos diálogos que propõe e desenvolve.

Dialogues on the greatness and beauty of Pernambuco

With this edition, Continente magazine enters a new phase. In a dynamic process of multiple dialogues. The printed and digital versions. In content and form.

The graphic design by designer and illustrator Christiano Mascaro accurately reflects the new editorial commitment. With a plastic and fluid logic. The thematic axes exist, but they are not slaves to the conventional sections and columns and other types of cut-outs. The way to read is informed by the drawings, the visual path, in which the image can also be read as a text. From less to more, in a crescendo, as in musical dynamics, but applied to the spatial: in a game of images and texts.

The thread running through this new Continente is intended to be graphic excellence, and subtle reinventions and reiterations with each new issue. Visual delight is sought, giving priority to design. The pleasure of the text is matched by that of the image. As such, reading can be more of a fun experience. This is the hallmark of the magazine, and it is visible - or implied - in the branding of each new edition, with slight variations. These represent the synthesis of plasticity, and reinforce a conviction: not to surrender to ready-made formulas, especially watertight ones.

Breaking conventions is not limited to the structure and organization of the printed edition. It is designed for a multiplatform environment, proposing another ‘alphabet’ in which, if culture has a dialog with content, that dialogue is also exercised on the continent.In this inaugural edition of the new phase the magazine celebrates Pernambuco. Its greatness, richness, beauties: both natural and cultural. Things that are unique or, at the very least, singular.

For tastes as diverse as people and cultures, this is a magazine where diversity sets the tone. From the Port of Suape to the island of Fernando de Noronha. From the Catimbau Valley to Kathmandu. From the Cangaço Museum in Serra Talhada to the cangaceiros mythologized in TV series and soap operas, and demystified in books. From a place of taste in Brasília Teimosa (Recife) to a place of work in Ceará.

Continente, which in its origins had a successful by-product in Documento, now incorporates it into the pages of the main magazine. It maintains and deepens the idea, with reports and researche that can serve as a reliable source of knowledge. If the key word here is source, it was also chosen to summarize the theme of this debut: a long and detailed overview of Pernambuco’s music. In the heat of summer - the first season of the new Continente - the hot rhythms of Pernambuco’s composers and singers: popular, mass, classical and avant-garde.

Finally, two curious facts: the word Pernambuco has two meanings for some foreigners which are unknown to most Brazilians. In Spain it is used in the expression “aquí y en Pernambuco”, meaning the most distant and exotic place possible. In France and other countries, it is synonymous with the wood used to make the best violins. Caesalpinia echinata, in other words, our brazilwood. For many Pernambucos, Pernambuco is just a continent, or at least, as in the engraving by Johan Blaeu (1643), “the country of Pernambuco”. Dreamt up by the heroes and martyrs of 1824 (whose bicentenary is this year, 2024). A state of cultural and natural greatness that grows and multiplies in the dialogues it proposes and develops.
